Ways to Get Involved

Want to know how you can get involved in the political process? Well look no further! One of the great things about living in a Democracy is the power of the people. The power of YOU! Here you can learn how to use that power to encourage the change and progress that you want to see in our country.

If you are old enough to vote or will be old enough to vote in the next election, and you are not yet registered to vote run, don't walk, to register. States have different deadlines for voter registration, but in most states you need to register at least 30 days before Election Day(the next election day is November 4, 2008).
We cannot stress enough how important for you to use your right to vote. One way to register is to use the National Mail Voter Registration Form.

What is it? The National Mail Voter Registration Form can be used to register to vote, report a change of name, report a change of address or register with a political party. For more information about registering to vote, contact your state election office. The national form also contains voter registration rules and regulations for each state and territory. You can download the National Mail Voter Registration Form by clicking here or by visiting: http://www.fec.gov/votregis/vr.shtml

I am a college student living somewhere other than where I am registered to vote. Can I vote here?

If you have recently moved to a new state or county to attend college you can still vote in an upcoming election. If you are a resident of the town you are currently living in (for example if you have a lease or utility bill in your name, etc.) you can register to vote where you currently live. If you live in a dorm or on-campus housing you likely are still a resident of your home state (the address on your driver's license or ID card). If this is the case don't worry. You can still vote by voting absentee. has a great section with information on applying to vote absentee. Find out more information on absentee ballots by visiting: http://www.declareyourself.com/voting_faq/voting_faq.html#moved

Contact your Representatives and Senators

Contact your members of Congress to make sure they know where you stand on issues. For information on how can contact your Senators click here. You can write to your Congressperson in the U.S. House of Representatives by clicking here.

Use your voice and hit the streets campaigning for a cause or candidate.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." - The First Amendment to the United States Constitution

Use your freedom of speech and the right to assemble to bring awareness to a cause you care about. Never let anyone shut you up and sit you down. Without activism and the will of the people within this country to stand up for what they believe in, the Civil Rights movement, Women's Rights movement, and all other movements that have shaped this country would have never happened.
